At Courtilpalot we aim to produce high quality plants, locally grown with minimum or no carbon footprint, in a sustainable and natural way.
We use no pesticides whatsoever on our edible produce and a minimum of natural control on our bedding plants.
Some of our produce may be a bit wonky and smaller than supermarket provided products. This reflects natural growing conditions such as sun, water and temperature variations.
We offer a fairly small number of plants reflecting what can be grown naturally in Guernsey, given our seasons, and growing environment.
BEDDING PLANTS
Dianthus - plant in full/partial sun, ideally in well drained soil.
Do not water in bright sunlight - ideally early morning or evening. Pinch out growing tips for a more bushy plant. Dead head to prolong flowering period.
Brahyscome ( Swan river daisy ) plant in full/partial sun and water early/late in the day. Pinch out growing tips for more bushy plant. Dead head to extend flowering.
Antirrinum ( Snapdragon ) - Plant in full/partial sun in well drained but moist soil. Water as required. Dead head to extend flowering. Pinch out growing tips for a more bushy plant.
VEGETABLE PLANTS
Courgettes - plant in a warm sunny or partial sunny location. If possible add well rotted manure and feed once a week with tomato feed once first flowers/fruit appears. Keep the plants well watered.
Basil - Basil can be tricky. The plants like a 'not too dry and not too moist' environment. So keep the soil moist and not too wet. Basil loves warm weather but not too hot or too exposed to the midday sun or they will wilt regardless of water retention. They don't like cold nights either .....
Parsley - Likes well drained soil with lots of organic matter. Likes a warm environment and well watered a couple of times a week - depending on the weather. If you cut the stems at the base the plant will re-grow and become more bushy, providing leaves for a long period.
Tomato - Tomato plants like a regular watering and feeding regime. Water once a day in the evening and feed once a week, once the flowers/fruit appear. In hot weather water in the morning too - but don't over water. Shade from fierce midday sun. Ideally plant in grow bags or a rich organic soil.
